Duplex Residence 72B at 53 West 53 comprises 4,216 square feet, offering three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, and south-, north-, east-, and west-facing exposures. Gracious proportions and ceilings ranging up to approximately 10 feet set the awe-inspiring stage for world-renowned designer Thierry Despont’s masterfully conceived interiors. Bespoke detailing typically reserved for privately commissioned homes abounds, while a rich yet soft palette of museum-quality finishes imbues each space with both modern glamour and timeless elegance.
On the 72nd floor, a formal entry foyer opens to the generous living room lined with floor-to-ceiling windows that artfully frame magnificent views of the southern New York City skyline. A clever pocket door opens to reveal the custom kitchen by Thierry Despont for Molteni, where polished statuary marble countertops and a back-lit statuary backsplash complement back-painted glass cabinetry with polished nickel detailing and Dornbracht fixtures. The extensive suite of appliances by Miele and Sub-Zero includes a fully integrated refrigerator and freezer, five-burner cooktop with fully vented hood, integrated dishwasher, wall oven, speed oven, under-counter wine refrigerator, and integrated coffee maker.
A corner bedroom with an en suite bathroom clad in high-honed Verona limestone with polished nickel Dornbracht fixtures, is well situated behind a pocket door, and features sprawling south- and east-facing views. A beautifully appointed powder room and a discreet utility room with washer and vented dryer completes this level.
At the west end of the residence, a custom floating staircase is wrapped in three walls of double-height floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase breathtaking Central Park, Hudson River and Downtown Skyline views, making for a dramatic ascent to the 73rd floor.
Upstairs, the corner primary suite offers south- and east-facing views; a walk-in closet; and a spacious, windowed en suite bath with radiant heated floors. Elegantly appointed in polished Noir St. Laurent marble, high-honed Verona limestone, and polished Persian golden travertine with polished nickel Dornbracht fixtures throughout, the primary bathroom features two separate custom carved vanities, a cast iron Lefroy Brooks soaking tub, freestanding shower, and private water closet with commode and bidet.
A secondary bedroom with south-facing views and an en suite bathroom clad in high-honed Verona limestone with polished nickel Dornbracht fixtures completes this level. No detail of this exceptional residence has been overlooked, from the custom interior lighting design by Thierry Despont in collaboration with Schwinghammer, to the motorized Lutron solar shades throughout with additional blackout shades in each bedroom, to the supply of humidified and filtered fresh air throughout the home.
With architecture by Pritzker Prize-winner Jean Nouvel and interiors by the legendary Thierry Despont, 53 West 53 is a true icon, rising 1,050 feet in the heart of Manhattan against the cinematic backdrop of Central Park and the surrounding cityscape. Over 30,000 square feet of extraordinary amenities and deeply personalized, five-star-hotel-level services transcend even the most discerning expectations. The building also features an on-premise partner restaurant, 53 by Altamarea Group, offering resident-only dining experiences.

About 53 West 53
Designed by Jean Nouvel, one of the most celebrated and prolific architects today, 53 West 53rd Street manages to be both theatrical and thoughtful. The supertall skyscraper has an exposed exoskeleton—or “diagrid”—that makes it hard to miss. The 1,050-foot building has a tapered silhouette that’s a nod to earlier skyscrapers and their mandatory setbacks. The effect is a soaring structure with a sense of geometry that feels avant-garde and an overall profile that’s respectful of its surroundings.
Thierry Despont earns his reputation as one of the most talented interior architects with this tower’s warm, luxurious spaces that easily coexist with the angular, contemporary exterior. This is particularly true in the sprawling 12,000-square-foot lobby, which echoes Nouvel’s design with its gridded floors of American oak and Noir St. Laurent marble and coffered ceilings but is softened by oak wood paneling and curved furnishings. The 145 homes range in size from one-bedroom residences to a duplex penthouse, and no two are exactly alike. “I approached the design of 53 West 53 as if each residence was a private home commission,” said Mr. Despont. All have a timeless elegance (think crown moldings and traditional tongue-and-groove floors), triple-glazed windows that afford views and minimize noise, and top-of-the-line fixtures and appliances.
A double-height lounge with spectacular Central Park views and a 65-foot swimming pool framed by vertical gardens designed by Patrick Blanc vie for the title of most impressive amenity. The list is extensive, with a variety of hotel-like offerings, and each space is executed perfectly, from the sleek wellness center to the handsome wine-tasting room. The tower’s location, directly above the Museum of Modern Art, inspired another perk for residents: a perpetual benefactor-level MoMA membership.
