With its iconic art-deco architecture, prime Chelsea location, palatial residences with unimpeded views, Walker Tower doesn’t leave much to be desired. Originally built in 1929 by lauded architect Ralph Walker, the skyscraper has been painstakingly restored by New York-based CetraRuddy. Their goal? To preserve as much of the original structure and detailing as possible while creating a modern luxury condominium tower. To say that they have succeeded is an understatement: this is the creme de la creme of New York living.

It’s difficult to know where to begin with this striking 24-story tower. The intricate brick facade (which called for nine different shapes of brick in five slightly different shades) is largely preserved, as is the ornate entranceway. What’s new? Oversized tilt-and-turn windows framed by bronze stainless-steel pilasters, custom-crafted panels that emulate historic motifs, and a crown, inspired by Walker’s original sketches and echoing the materials of the entrance. And those setbacks? They’ve been converted into terraces; more than half the residences have private outdoor space with views for days.
This formerly industrial area, once known for its nightlife, has become an innovative and fashion-forward hub of art and culture. This transformation is largely due to the High Line, an elevated park that extends along Manhattan’s West Side and is bookended by the Whitney Museum of Art and Hudson Yards, a massive residential and commercial complex that’s part office park, part condo towers, and part tourist attraction. Also nearby: Chelsea Market, the Meatpacking District, and the Hudson River Greenway.
There are 47 residences in total, many with private terraces, 11 with wood-burning fireplaces, and all with soaring ceilings, oversized windows, and grand proportions. You’ll also find French herringbone oak flooring, marble bathrooms, and top-of-the-line appliances, as you’d expect, and another feature you might not: 18-inch-thick walls, a selling point for JDS Development Group’s Michael Stern. “I knew we had something that no one in New York had—an absurdly solid building,” Stern said.
The amenities at Walker Tower check all the boxes: there’s a fitness center (with a yoga room and sauna), a landscaped roof deck, a library, and a play area for the little ones. But the real draw is the location in the heart of Chelsea, in one of the neighborhood’s most iconic buildings, designed by one of New York’s most famed architects. Art galleries, boutique shops, and restaurants, as well as the High Line, are just outside the (extremely impressive) door.
