An ambitiously sprawling urban utopia, Greenwich Peninsula spans 170 acres of Thames-side land in south London, bristling with public galleries and outdoor artworks, abundant leisure facilities, two new schools, riverside paths, and 48 acres of green space. A central part of this redevelopment will be its 17,000 new residences, including the 1,431 studio to three-bedroom/duplex residences at Upper Riverside and Peninsula Gardens. Although styled differently by their respective architects, Upper Riverside and Peninsula Gardens both elevate urban riverside living, taking full advantage of a spectacular setting while weaving greenery throughout the condominium spaces—whether with lofty winter gardens or family-friendly parks on the grounds.
About Greenwich Peninsula
Upper Riverside, crafted by SOM (designers of the Kansas City Airport’s new terminal), is an artful collection of five glass and stone prism-shaped towers, stepping down dramatically toward the River Thames and populated by terrace/rooftop trees. The vast glass facades, punctuated by terraces, emphasize the interaction between the condominiums and the water.
Peninsula Gardens, designed by Allies and Morrison, creators of the nearby Custom House Elizabeth Line station, is a community of four stylish brickwork towers on the Greenwich Peninsula waterfront, with balconies leading out from the living spaces, many overlooking the water. Gardens thriving with evergreens and seasonal flowers pull the condominiums together, creating a wholesome community environment.
Since the arrival of the Millennium Dome (now The O2 Arena) in 2000, North Greenwich has flourished into an increasingly popular cultural destination. Today, the neighborhood sings with audacious art installations, as well as attractions like The Jetty with its urban gardening and dining, and the elevated linear park, The Tide. The cable car provides a unique transport link from North Greenwich to the Docklands on the other side of the Thames. Maritime Greenwich is a stone’s throw away, with its Christopher Wren-designed Royal Naval College, the historic Cutty Sark ship museum, and Greenwich Park—home to one of the most famous vistas of London.
Dara Huang, the founder of architectural and design firm Design Haus Liberty, conceived the interiors for the 28 floors of No. 5 Upper Riverside, the tallest of the condominium towers. The River Thames and its shoreline provide the inspiration for the natural-industrial fusion of materials and textures—gorgeously speckled terrazzo aggregate bathroom panels, stained oak floors, and brushed stainless-steel fittings. Huang also designed the soft, creamy palette of the duplex penthouse collection.
“Light, characterful and uncomplicated” is how Peninsula Gardens touts its interiors, envisaged by Knight Dragon’s design team. The studio to two-bedroom residences here—ranging from 460 to 795 square feet—feature a muted, natural palette, with plenty of creams, as well as timber floors. Inviting a pop of organic color into the mix are accents of woody greens and rusty-hued balconies.
Both sets of residences are well-served by amenities. Upper Riverside offers an exclusive members club; it’s a contemporary twist on the classic London clubs, with a focus on wellbeing and creativity, as designed by a dream team composed of Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio, Studio Ashby, Design Haus Liberty, and Emulsion. In addition, it has a roof terrace, a fitness center, an indoor pool, and a library/coworking space.
Peninsula Gardens features a private podium garden and residents’ lounge, as well as a fitness center and coworking space. Both Upper Riverside and Peninsula Gardens provide 24-hour concierge services.
