Eleven Spectacular Condo Launches of 2020
By: LX Collection
This year has thrown most industries into uncharted waters, and the luxury condominium market is no exception. Still, 2020 witnessed major sales launches for a slew of exciting, and sometimes pioneering, condominium developments worldwide.
Central Park Tower, New York City
Cresting 1,550 feet above the southern end of Central Park, this shimmering tower houses 179 apartments. Extell and Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture’s vision places the building on par with Manhattan’s other iconic skyscrapers. For those who live at Central Park Tower, its height of 300 feet means showstopping vistas of New York City from glass-walled residences—and from its Central Park Club amenities, spanning three floors of the building.
Cadence, London
The formerly industrial King’s Cross neighborhood has witnessed a sea change in the past decade; now, it’s home to Google and YouTube HQs, gas holders repurposed into canal-side parks, and a host of fine dining options. Cadence is one of the latest residences to launch here, with 103 apartments with oak floors and brass fittings within the handsome redbrick design by Alison Brooks Architects. Cadence’s arches take their cue from nearby architectural tour de force King’s Cross station.
Hyll on Holland, Singapore
Minutes from Singapore’s sprawling Botanic Gardens, Hyll on Holland is among the most covetable condominium launches in the Asian city-state this year. Two- and three-bedroom apartments command views of a grand arrival court flanked with trees and a “lagoon” pool with wet deck. In fact, with its panoply of gardens, pagodas, and water features, Hyll on Holland residents have their own botanic gardens right at home.
Mr. C Residences Coconut Grove, Miami
A touch of Italian sophistication sails into the Miami waterfront, courtesy of Mr. C Residences Coconut Grove. Maggio and Ignazio—brothers within the Cipriani dynasty—promise a “modern vision of old-world simplicity and stylish European glamour” from these residences, which launched in February. Architecture firm Arquitectonica took inspiration from the yachts in the marina, which the homes will overlook when they are completed in 2022. A private poolside Bellini bar best sums up the vibe at these condos.
Liberty Market Tower, Toronto
This 28-story condominium completes in 2021. Farmers markets, craft beer bars, and the home of Canada’s Major League Soccer team lie at the doorstep of Toronto’s Liberty Market Tower. These condos from Lifetime Developments—which promise “spacious outdoor terraces and contemporary glass and brick facades”—are set to attract a work-hard, play-hard crowd of Torontonians and newcomers.
Artis, Melbourne
“Art in Motion” is how architect Koichi Takada describes Artis, his twin-towered, ribbon-effect condominiums in Melbourne, Australia, where 153 apartments launched in 2020—boasting access to a rooftop lounge and garden, plus indoor pool and Jacuzzi. They’re expected to go quickly, owing to strong demand for unique residences like this Down Under. In keeping with the Southbank District’s cultural leanings, Artis will also feature a community arts space and cafe for the local creative community.
67 Vestry, New York City
The Romanesque Revival building at 67 Vestry—reinvisioned for a contemporary clientele by BP Architects and Gachot Studios—offers just 13 residences, all peering over the Hudson. Its views are matched by interiors with proportions you rarely see in New York City (the triplex penthouse spans over 6,200 square feet), as well as a 50-foot lap pool. For alfresco exercise, residents will find the Hudson River Greenway seconds away.
Lantern House, New York City
British designer Thomas Heatherwick doesn’t do dull, and at Lantern House—his first US residential project—his imagination prevails again. Huge apartment windows bow outward, forming the eponymous lanterns and creating condos with a wow factor. By his own testimony, Heatherwick wanted a building “you might want to live in, not just look at,” so, while the windows provide dramatic Hudson views, the apartments boast 10-foot, nine-inch ceilings—and tasteful interiors by March and White Design.
Bloom Towers: Tower A, Dubai
The “Elite building” of Dubai’s Bloom Towers trio went on the market in November. Presiding 43 stories over the edge of Jumeirah Village Circle, Tower A also promises buyers a host of fitness amenities, including a jogging track, gym, and lap pool. Jumeirah Golf Estates, Mall of the Emirates, and Palm Jumeirah are all within easy reach.
Cloud Residences SKV 23, Bangkok
Three hundred and seventy-two residences went on the market at Cloud Residences SKV 23 in Bangkok earlier this year. In the face of an economic downturn, the enterprising Risland group is launching $693 million worth of projects, starting with these luxury condominiums in the popular Asoke District of Bangkok. One- and two-bedroom apartments occupy 43 floors of this Tandem Architects building, rounded off with a modernist penthouse boasting a soaring ceiling. Among the covetable amenities here is a fitness center that’s glass-walled on three sides, offering views across the city. Stairs from the center rise to a private roof terrace for another outlook over Bangkok.
Monaco Yacht Club & Residences, Miami
An example of how the industry rose to meet 2020’s tribulations, Monaco Yacht Club & Residences—12 elegant stories composed of 39 luxury residences in Miami’s MiMo District—launched sales in 2019. But when the pandemic arrived in early 2020, Monaco Yacht Club pivoted to create the world’s first-ever global virtual sales gallery. Cue interest from Paris and Madrid, São Paulo and Buenos Aires. Others have followed Monaco Yacht Club’s live-streaming lead. The condominium industry isn’t just weathering this pandemic; it’s growing from it.
